The 2008 Southern Skies Tournament was held this year from the 6-11 of July with Indigenous hockey player Kelly Lewis and umpire Roneece Cupitt being involved.

The Southern Skies Tournament is an Under 18 competition held each year that is organised by Brisbane Boys College and includes a number of sports.

Lewis was a member of the Brisbane Women hockey team, who won the girls’ grand final 1-0 ahead of the New Zealand team, Macleans. She is also on the Hockey Australia National Indigenous Talent Identification Squad.

Roneece Cupitt was also involved, umpiring the hockey tournament. She is a player in National and State Veterans teams and was a part of the Alice Springs Masters Games Gold Medal Women’s Team, which is the first Indigenous Women Hockey team and the recipient of the Brisbane Black Diamond Award 2004.

Cupitt has been a volunteer junior girls coach and is in her third year as the coach of the QUT Men’s Turf Team. She works with Gulf Sport and Recreation Association and Hockey Queensland to help children in these areas.
